Music Coordinator

Description

The Music Coordinator provides leadership for the music ministry of the church.  The Music Coordinator works in a collegial and cooperative setting to expand and integrate the church’s music program into all areas of worship, including working with pastoral staff, the music ministry and relevant committees on the liturgical expression of music in services. This position is also involved in the creation, presentation, and delivery of special concerts throughout the year.    

This position requires the ability to communicate and work collaboratively with the staff, church members, friends, volunteers, guests, ensembles and accompanists.  

Responsibilities Include:

  • provides leadership for established and emerging musical groups.
  • collaborates with pastoral staff and organists to select music for worship.
  • arranges for hymn leaders in support of weekly services.
  • ensures that all music used at UCC adheres to current copyright regulations.
  • supervision of church organists, chancel choir, bell choir directors and sound technician.
  • communicate regularly with all members of the UCC Music Team.
  • knowledge of sound board and worship streaming programs.(training provided)
  • supervision of sound system tech support staff and provision of backup support as needed.
  • provision of weekly worship music content for slides and bulletins.
  • management of audio equipment such as microphones for worship services and special events as needed. (training provided)
  • oversee the Music Ministry budget through arranging payments for guest artists, ordering music, preparing the annual budget requests for the Cabinet and monitoring budget usage throughout the year.

Time and schedule: This is a twelve-month appointment, averaging up to 32 hours per month, including Sunday mornings to support music, technology and audio needs.  Important dates in the church calendar such as Christmas, Easter, etc., generally require additional hours, as will special concerts, presentations, and special ensembles for worship services. 

Evaluation and Accountability: The Music Coordinator is supervised by and will receive guidance and support from the Senior Pastor with input from the Worship and Spiritual Life committee, and acts as the supervisor for the organists, chancel and handbell choir directors, and the sound system tech support staff.  This position is evaluated annually. 

Requirements 

  1. A minimum of three years’ musical training and/or experience required. 
  2. Experience with a variety of musical ensembles and understanding of their unique needs.
  3. Familiarity with the breadth and depth of musical styles and ability to integrate them into worship and liturgy.
  4. Fundamental understanding and respect for the faith, affirmations, and traditions of UCC.
  5. Some degree of flexibility in scheduling work hours. 
  6. Bachelor’s degree preferred. (or life experience)
  7. Must agree to and pass a background check before employment and follow all UCC policies and procedures as found in the Handbook.  

Skills

  1. Ability to design and create programs, flyers, and posters for concerts and special events, including notices on social media and other platforms. (some training provided)
  2. Ability to keep detailed and accurate financial records.
  3. Ability to handle stress, problem solve, learn new tasks quickly and juggle multiple time-sensitive demands. 
  4. Demonstrated written, verbal, active listening, and organizational skills.
  5. Ability to demonstrate flexibility and utilize good people skills to work effectively with the church and local community.
