What is Progressive Christianity?
November 3, 2024 11:30 am – 1:00 pm
Fireside Room at UCC Missoula, 405 University Ave, Missoula, MT 59801, USA
What Is Progressive Christianity? A New Class
Have you been curious about what “progressive Christianity” means? Pastor John Lund and Joyce Hocker will lead a class on Identifying and letting go of broken or limiting stories, in favor of moving toward theology and practice that supports a beloved community where all are welcome and empowered. We will not be using one particular book, but will give you several options for reading if you want to go deeper. The class this coming Sunday, Oct. 6, after worship in the Fireside Room, may be challenging for some, while it lays the foundation for what comes next. The title is “Deconstructing Christianity: From Orthodoxy, to Mainline, to Progressive.” Come join the discussion as we build our community vision together. The next classes will be on Oct. 20, Oct. 27, and Nov. 3. The class will be offered on zoom for those who wish to participate online. You need not sign up—and are welcome at any of the sessions even if you can’t attend all.

Confluence: "Do the Good that is Yours to Do"
Confluence: "Do the Good that is Yours to Do"
November 3, 2024 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Fireside Room at UCC Missoula, 405 University Ave, Missoula, MT 59801, USA
We are presented with opportunities to engage with things that matter all the time – door knocking, donating to this or that fundraiser, volunteering, even posting or reposting things we are passionate about on social media. This week as part of our Words for the Beginning series, we receive the blessing “do the good that is yours to do”. Despite what the world might say, we are not called to do it all or be it all. From our own contexts, identities, and positionality we are called to do the good that is ours… what we can do with God’s help. This week we will also celebrate Holy Communion – another way to get in touch with who we are and how we are called to live in the world as followers of Jesus.
A Note About Communion:
We celebrate the Christian ritual of Holy Communion once per season as a way to acknowledge the presence of the Divine within and among us. At Confluence, all are invited to set the table as hosts and eat together as beloved guests, especially those who have been excluded or uninvited from this ritual in the past. As with all pieces of Confluence Gatherings, you are welcome to participate to whatever degree is comfortable and meaningful to you.

Contemplative Prayer (Zoom)
Contemplative Prayer (Zoom)
November 7, 2024 7:00 am – 8:00 am
Our God calls us to love, to seek justice, to be peacemakers, to care for all creation. None of this outer action happens without inner transformation and support. One place where inner change happens is your heart and one pathway to that change is contemplative or centering prayer. The contemplative/centering prayer group meets every Thursday morning, 7-8 am, in the sanctuary. Yes it’s early – 7 AM – but the UCC sanctuary is amazingly peaceful at that time. What do we do there?
We sit in silence, for about 25 minutes. Some of us practice Centering Prayer, some use other forms of silent meditation. All forms are welcome, but if you need some guidance in a meditation practice, we are happy to help. We hear inspiration from writers and poets who words are open-hearted, encouraging and sometimes challenging. We listen, in the silence, to small parts of scripture, listening for how it applies to our own lives. We share ‘prayers of the people’ and hold all prayers not only in confidence but also before God. The whole session lasts until about 8 AM, but it’s easy to slip out after the silent meditation if one needs to. This group has been meeting continuously since 2000; it is open to all and we would love to have you join us.
We currently meet on Zoom. Please contact Jean at jwoessner “at” bigsky.net for meeting information.

“Lend a Hand, Show Your Heart” – UCC EmPower Pack Build
November 8, 2024 4:30 pm – 7:00 pm
Missoula Food Bank & Community Center, 1720 Wyoming St, Missoula, MT 59801, USA
On Friday, November 8 from 4:30-7:00 pm, UCC Missoula is invited to lend hands, young, old and in between, to build EmPower Packs at the Missoula Food Bank. EmPower Packs are the primary component of weekend nutrition for school-aged students, helping them to stay healthy and nourished when school is not in session. Each pack contains 3-4 entrees, 2 breakfasts, hearty snacks, fresh fruit and milk. Our job is to assemble thousands of these, and we need and welcome ALL hands. This is an all-ages event and a great opportunity to show up for UCC Missoula. We have committed to 50 participants, so we need to know who’s coming. Sign up in the narthex or at https://bit.ly/Nov8empowerpack.

Worship: Prayer Service
Worship: Prayer Service
November 17, 2024 10:00 am – 11:00 am
Sanctuary at UCC Missoula, 405 University Ave, Missoula, MT 59801, USA
Early in the fall we planned a prayer service in November, and now it feels like a great choice as we deal with the divisions and uncertainty around us. Join us for a Prayers and Healing Service this Sunday. This service will feature Taizé music and an open time to move through prayer stations including candle lighting, burning things we want to release in the firepit, individual prayers and blessings, and hanging prayer flags. We trust this will be a space to name our laments, fears, grief, and anxiety for ourselves, community, and world; as well as whatever else in on our hearts and minds.
Also this week after church: we are invited to join in Table Talk conversations around our listening season with a focus on where our passions, vision, and leadership are around justice and service for the months to come. (Zoom session available, ask Katrina)
